The new product has enhanced bone plate fit and reduced protrusion

West Chester, Pennsylvania – June 9, 2021 – Today, Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices* announced that DePuy Synthes** has launched a 2.7 mm Variable Angle Locking Compression Plate (VA LCP®) Clavicle Plate System for Treatment of lateral, axial and medial fractures for small, medium and large clavicles. 1 The plate shape provided by this new system reflects the correlation between the patient's height and the size of the clavicle to match the arch and contour of the clavicle and accommodate the wide anatomical variation of the clavicle. 2 The VA LCP® Clavicle Plate System provides a thinner plate, a more accurate fit between the plate and the bone, and reduces the degree of protrusion. 2

Clavicle fractures or clavicle fractures account for about 5% of all adult fractures. 3 In complex situations, the patient may need to use a fixation device for surgery to readjust the clavicle. 4 One of the most common complications of this surgery is the need to remove the hardware due to the irritation caused by the protruding plate. 4

"The next-generation VA clavicle plate system is the result of a collaborative and comprehensive morphological and epidemiological study of the AO Institute, the AO Technical Committee and the DePuy Synthes Upper Limb R&D Team," said Simon Lambert of London, England serving as an orthopedic surgeon and AO Technical Committee Chairman of the Upper Limb Global Expert Committee***, who assisted in the development of the system. "The system provides an optimized length sequence with novel shapes and forms; matches the range of adult clavicle sizes, has better plate fit, optimizes fracture fixation for all adult patient groups, and may reduce grafts caused by protruding plates. Incoming and removing needs."

Throughout the development of the 2.7 mm VA LCP® Clavicle System, DePuy Synthes conducted extensive research; examined more than 600 clavicle CT scans from a broad patient population and analyzed 15 different parameters of each bone to determine the patient’s height and Correlation between the shape of the clavicle. 5 These data are used to design patients with a wide range of different statures, including patients with short stature, with low-profile plates that enhance the plate-to-bone fitting. 2

IV Hall****, Global President of Trauma, Limbs, CMF and Animal Health at DePuy Synthes, said: "There is a great need for a treatment plan that can adapt to the anatomical variation of the clavicle in patients experiencing these types of fractures." "We are very proud to be able to provide this new system as a Part of our comprehensive limb product portfolio."

The VA LCP® Clavicle System will be launched globally this year. To learn more, click here.
